Welcome to 5th Grade!
Bem Vindo! Bienvenidos! Mabuhay!
Welcome to Fifth Grade! My name is Ms. Haarz and this is my first year at St. Joachim! I could not be more excited to be part of this community. I was born and raised in Oakland, CA and completed my BA in International Studies from CSUEB, where I also swam on the swim team. When I’m not in the classroom I can be found swimming, biking, or running -- or even combining all 3 for triathlons! I love exploring this beautiful area we live in by going on hikes with my dog, Elkie. I am a huge sports fan! From March through October (hopefully) I can be found cheering loudly at Oakland A’s games.
A year to remember....
During the fifth grade year, St. Joachim students will learn about the sacraments and perform service projects. While studying American history, students will learn about European explorers, experience colonial life activities such as sewing and calligraphy, and create multimedia projects about the fifty states. In addition, students will have the chance to read exciting literature, such as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” and “Holes”.
Fifth graders will also participate in our own economy system in the classroom and create opportunities to experience real life applications of important Math concepts and social skills. Furthermore, technology will be a driving force in 5th grade. All students will use laptops several times during the week in preparation for their move to sixth grade and participation in our 1-1 laptop program. We will also be utilizing iPads often to read, practice skills, create Keynote presentations, take online quizzes, and work on our checking accounts. Students will work with Google Docs and learn how to create, share, edit, and collaborate with their classmates and myself in our secure online classroom.
